Travel Diary

#1: Monastiraki Square, Athens

There’s a lot of ratios and relationships that whiz through my brain when I’m travelling. One of them is the popularity of a location is directly proportionate to the number of touts, hawkers and “gift-givers” roaming the area.

I used to avoid these areas, mainly because I’d freeze in response to any approach. In those moments, I’d be swamped with paranoid thoughts of hoods being thrown over my head and ransoms being issued for my safe return, all because I refused to take a bracelet.

Thankfully, I learnt to get over myself before visiting Monastiraki Square in Athens. While there are a lot touts and “gift-givers”, there’s so much laughter and action going on that makes it a great place sit for hours while knocking back the Greek caffe.
